ITEM IS FOR ORGANIZER ONLY, BOARD GAME PIECES AND UNITS NOT INCLUDED
Pecklabs newest epic storage insert system is for GMT Games Commands and Colors: Napoleonics. We created this insert because we were tired of constantly digging through stacks of cubes to set up each scenario and find those elusive guards units. The available inserts in the market we found were overglorified tackle boxes with cubes crammed in any which way. Such an epic game deserves better!
This organizer is intended to serve primarily as a durable, useful storage tool which will provide many years of enjoyment, but beyond that we intended it to serve as an aesthetically pleasing display piece for those that simply enjoy seeing such a multitude of different sized and colored cubes organized in a coherent manner.
DESIGN:
Wasted space and shifting contents are the bane of any board gamer's insert. A tremendous amount of analysis went into designing the layout of storage trays. Because some sides have relatively more cavalry or artillery compared to infantry, it was necessary to create a number of custom trays. Each tray consists of a variable number of rows, with some colors having appropriately wider rows to house larger units.
To identify these, we constructed the core dimensions to fit an organizer into half a box. We use a vertical divider in the middle to create more bins for organization, with conceivably even the left and right sides of a tray varying in number of bins. Most units are in sufficient numbers that it is possible to use a double stacked tray, whereas for smaller nations (such as Portugal and the second English tray), it's possible to use a single stack. An infantry bin will then store either 5 or 10 units in a row, with cavalry or artillery rows storing 4 or 8 units.
To facilitate ease of use, finger holes through the tray allow access to push blocks out from the back.
We analyzed thousands of possible permutations and then used optimization techniques to solve for the best design of bins. We landed on 9 uniquely different types of tray and a total set of 15 trays to house all of the units in all currently released expansions. All of the units will then fit into the base C&C box and the Epics box with lids secured.
To solve the problem of units shifting, we've added attachment points for a snapping lid to hold everything tight. These are not required; due to the significant increase in work required to create 15 lids to match 15 trays, we offer them as an upgrade. Base trays can be held in place without lids with reference cards/manuals/maps etc.
STORAGE CAPACITY:
We designed the insert to store the following unit counts. In our opinion, there is enough latitude to well-organize an army where each specific unit gets an area mostly to itself, but due to the odd numbers of some unit types, mixing units can and does occur within each bin.
French Units (Blue):
3 double-stacked trays, 1 single stacked tray
192 Infantry, 136 Cavalry, 42 Artillery/Leaders
English Units (Red):
1 double-stacked tray, 1 single stacked tray
99 Infantry, 45 Cavalry, 24 Artillery/Leaders
Portugese Units (Brown):
1 single stacked tray
41 Infantry, 12 Cavalry, 9 Artillery
Spanish Units (Yellow):
1 double stacked tray, 1 single stacked tray. One half of the single tray is reserved for slight unit overflow from Portugese, Russian, and Russian units.
83 Infantry, 36 Cavalry, 13 Artillery
Russian Units (Green):
2 double stacked trays
112 Infantry, 72 Cavalry, 35 Artillery
Austrian Units (White):
2 double stacked trays
144 Infantry, 48 Cavalry, 27 Artillery
Prussian Units (Gray):
2 double stacked trays
124 Infantry, 39 Cavalry, 28 Artillery
Nothing is quite perfect, in our base assignment there is a slight overflow of 11 Portugese Infantry, 9 English infantry, 2 Russian infantry, and 3 Russian artillery. These fit comfortably on one half of the second Spanish tray. The Prussian trays have a lot of additional storage space as well. Additionally, more trays are available for purchase.
EXPANSION 7: GRAND BATTLES
Rather than re-designing the entirety of the system for those who might not opt to purchase the latest expansion in the series, we've created 2 additional black trays to store the incremental units which do not fit in the base + expansion 1-6 boxes. Spanish troops can easily go to Spanish trays, and Prussians into the Prussian trays. Remaining forces get lumped into the black trays for the largest battles.
The other materials in the expansion fit in the existing system...hexes and counters fit in the other pieces.
Fitting the system:
1) 17 troop trays in the Grand Battles and Base Game box
2) Grand Battles printed materials in Epics box
3) Cards/Dice/Counters/Hexes in 1 expansion box
4) All other boards/printed materials in 2 more expansion boxes.
HEX/CARD/TOKEN STORAGE:
We're quite proud of this offering. Hexes are stored in 6 stacks in 2 separate durable removable inserts. Hollow insides allow fingers to easily grab the surface for removal.
Tokens and dice are stored in 6 separate removable bins.
Cards presume that the Command deck from Expansion 5 (larger than the base game deck) have replaced the base game. Separate spots reside in the holder for Tactician and Command cards.
A small removable bin for miscellaneous pieces or a few dice (unfortunately it will not fit all 8) rounds out the internal storage of the token holder.
A sliding dovetail lid is embossed with cross swords for a pleasing, thematic touch at the table while holding everything secure.
The 2 hex trays and the token storage box are designed to sit flushly within a single expansion box.
HOW TO ORDER:
We are offering a complete set of trays which comes in the appropriate colors, and then each side as a stand-alone. Each side is identical to that which comes in the full set for the unit quantities above.
We love the snapping lids. They work extremely well, prevent accidental spills of units everywhere, and look great. We wish we could throw them in for free. However, they are somewhat time consuming to produce and therefore we are offering them as an upgrade. Each set is offered "With" and "Without" Lid.
The double-stacked trays are 19.75MM tall without the lid and 20.75MM with the lid. The single stacked trays are 10.75MM and 11.75MM respectively. These dimensions were chosen to be able to stack the French army to a height of 74MM to exactly fit the depth of the larger game box. We store all army expansions in the base game box and Epics expansion box.
Expansion boxes are 50MM deep which would accommodate 2 double stacked trays, 4 single stacked trays, and some additional reference materials. We're using one expansion box for maps and an additional expansion box to house the token holder and hex storage.
We're also offering an expansion tray for those wanting more storage space. This is the most versatile tray in our experience. The layout of this tray is 3 rows of infantry, 2 rows of cavalry, and one row of artillery. In a single stack, this stores 30 infantry, 16 cavalry, and 8 artillery, with quantities doubled in a double stack. Artillery and leaders can be laid on its side in the cavalry rows, fitting therefore up to 30 infantry and 20 artillery in a tray.
The "TOKEN/HEX ONLY" option comes with the card holder, the embossed lid, all the removable storage bins, and the 2 hex holder pieces. Together, these occupy a single expansion box fully (the slightly slimmer, 2" box, not the original 3" box that came with the game.)
Please reach out for any additional clarification or concerns you might have.
We're proud to offer a similar set for C&C: Medieval and C&C: Ancients.
