PeckLabs presents the storage solution to the latest COIN game from GMT Games: China's War. Escalation of the conflict in China following the conflict at the Marco Polo Bridge is a topic of little understood impact in western histories of World War II and we are thrilled to see a game focus on this time period.
Our organizer utilizes the innate space within the board game cardboard insert. We've created an organizer which stores the COIN cards, the AI cards, and features a variety of removable bins for token storage and the wooden pieces for each side. An embossed lid features the artwork we thought thematically appropriate to represent this conflict: the rising sun rays of Japan set against the winding relief of the Great Wall.
The organizer features a dovetail lid which slides into place. Within the organizer, there are 5 removable bins:
- A counter storage tray which sits on top. These are configured to allow maximum space for control markers. Smaller sub-divided areas hold the markers for terror/sabotage, the general game marking counters, and influence status. In our personal use, we've stored some excess Sabotage/Terror markers in plastic baggies underneath the head/footboards of the original GMT insert, as well as the spare units on the insert sheet.
- 2 removable trays featuring the police, troops, and insurgent units of the respective forces. The 2 bins are divided into halves. One tray is slightly larger than the other to fit the nationalist and Japanese forces more appropriately. Bases and hexes fit in these. The large cylinder for turn markers, score markers, etc MIGHT fit in here, but the clearance is tight.
- 2 removable trays for miscellaneous pieces, action pawns, score trackers, and dice. We love organizers that have a perfect spot for everything, but in this case, we've found it is best to leave 2 trays for "catch-all" bins. Pawns, dice, and the tall cylinders which track COIN faction resources, score, and action turns get moved to here.
We wish it could be perfect, but we made the design decision that it's better to allow some slippage in storage in these units by mixing score trackers and pawns than to increase the size of the organizer.
Cards nest within the assigned areas. The smaller COIN deck fits on bottom, with an elevated lift and a finger access to provide clearance. The automa faction deck (much larger) sits on top on its designed recessed fit.
This organizer works best if the number of action pawns can be limited to only use 3-6 of the 12 which come with the game. In this way, clearances and storage allowances are much more natural. It will accommodate all 12, but we've never found a need for that number of pawns in a COIN game and we store 6 of ours in baggies.
The organizer lifts slightly above the recessed surface of the game cardboard insert. This does not create any box lift with the manual and the game board. It gives more space in the bins to fit the pieces with additional room instead of cramming everything as tightly as possible.
We believe this is an extremely useful organizer at an extremely attractive price. We would be grateful and happy to answer any questions.
